The story behind this place
Shinkyogoku was created in 1872 and developed as an entertainment and shopping street. Its temples, shrine entrances and souvenir shops give this busy central arcade several layers of Kyoto history.
The city’s tourism guide describes the street’s development around temple grounds and its later theatres and entertainment venues. Shopping here has long involved visitors as well as local people. This background helps explain why religious entrances and lively commercial signs appear so close together.
Look beyond the main flow of shoppers for small temple approaches, following each site’s opening and photography guidance. The arcade and those religious precincts have different roles and access conditions. Teramachi runs parallel to the west, making a short loop possible without assuming both streets offer exactly the same visit.
