Take the cable car up Otokoyama and follow the wooded approach to the shrine. Allow time for the walk from the upper station.
The story behind this place
Founded in 859, this shrine brought worship of Hachiman, a protective deity, to a hill near the imperial capital. The monk Gyokyo played a central role in its foundation. Its elevated setting was part of a sacred landscape intended to protect Kyoto.
