A shrine at the edge of Gion.
Walk through the public shrine grounds before continuing toward southern Higashiyama. Worshippers and ceremonies take priority over photographs.
The story behind this place
Yasaka Shrine is closely linked with the Gion Festival, whose origins lie in rites held during an epidemic in 869. People sought protection from disease through worship. The festival’s spectacular processions grew from that serious concern for the health of the city.
