Moss-covered rakan in the wooded hills.
The moss-covered rakan are the highlight of Otagi Nenbutsuji. Look closely at their individual faces and gestures, then explore the temple paths. This is separate from Adashino Nenbutsuji downhill. Take a taxi or Kyoto Bus uphill from Arashiyama, then consider walking back through Saga Toriimoto toward the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge.
The story behind this place
The temple’s restoration brought together sculptor and priest Kocho Nishimura and visitors who carved rakan figures. Around 1,200 expressive statues now fill the grounds. Moss and woodland give these comparatively recent carvings their distinctive setting.
