Stone memorials in the hills of Okusaga.
Adashino Nenbutsuji is a place of remembrance in Saga Toriimoto. Its stone figures and memorial markers are the focus of the visit; a bamboo path offers another view of the grounds. This is a different temple from Otagi Nenbutsuji farther uphill. Photography is prohibited inside the enclosed Sai no Kawara area; follow the signs and current temple guidance.
The story behind this place
Around 8,000 stone memorials gathered from the Adashino area are preserved here. They recall the area’s long history as a burial and memorial place. The rows of stones are objects of remembrance, while Otagi’s expressive rakan statues have a different origin.
