Winter lights & snow

Enjoy lights in Osaka, then consider a separate trip for snow. Snow is not a dependable attraction in Osaka city; Kyoto’s mountain areas also depend on the weather.

Lights: check each event’s dates. Snow: check current conditions and transport before leaving.

Where to look for snow within Kyoto City

Look north, and choose the destination after checking the weather. Central Kyoto gets only occasional light snow; its northern mountain districts are better candidates. The comparison below is an editorial guide, not a measured snowfall ranking or a snow forecast. Both areas are within Kyoto City.

Ohara · Sanzenin surroundings

A useful first choice when snow is reported in northern Kyoto. The village and temple gardens offer a compact visit; snow can remain here when central Kyoto is clear. Check today’s conditions before committing to the bus trip.

Bus to Ohara, then walk to the temples. Check Kyoto Bus service updates; snowy roads can disrupt the journey.

Kurama & Kibune

Choose one village for an unhurried winter visit. The northern valley setting is more promising than central Kyoto after snowfall, but snow is not continuous. Kifune Shrine’s snowy-day illuminations are held only when specifically announced; they are not a nightly winter event.

Eizan Railway to Kurama or Kibuneguchi; Kibune needs an onward bus or approach walk. Check both services. Avoid the mountain trail between the villages in snow or ice.

For a first visit, check Ohara or Kurama/Kibune first. Snowy Kinkakuji photographs are beautiful, but do not travel there solely on the assumption that snow will be present.

Check the destination’s latest notice, the forecast and both outbound and return transport on the day. Wear shoes with grip and allow daylight for walking. If services are disrupted, enjoy a city visit instead. Reviewed October 15, 2026.
