A mountain temple beyond the city.
Plan the uphill temple visit separately from the village. The mountain trail from Kibune is steep and can close in bad weather; use transport around the mountain when necessary.
The story behind this place
Kurama is linked with Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a celebrated 12th-century warrior who spent part of his childhood here. In legend, a tengu, a supernatural mountain being, taught him fighting skills. The tale belongs to the mountain’s folklore, rather than documented military training.
