A five-storey pagoda south of Kyoto Station.
Visit the paid Kondo and Kodo halls and view the pagoda from the gardens. Pagoda interior access is seasonal. Toji is a different temple from Toji-in in western Kyoto.
The story behind this place
Toji means East Temple. It belonged to the religious landscape of the old imperial capital and later became closely associated with Kukai, the monk who established Shingon Buddhism in Japan. Its pagoda is a familiar Kyoto landmark. The similarly named Toji-in is a different temple.
