A forest approach to Shimogamo Shrine.
Follow the wooded paths beside the streams, then continue to Shimogamo Shrine if you wish. The forest and shrine are separate Places here; a combined visit shares the same approach, so do not count it twice.
The story behind this place
This forest is part of Shimogamo Shrine’s sacred landscape. Its streams and wooded approaches make the transition from the modern city to a place of worship. The paths are also used for shrine ceremonies; the forest is a living religious setting rather than a separate theme park.
