The story behind this place
Tokugawa Ieyasu, the military ruler who established Japan’s long-lasting Tokugawa government, built Nijo Castle in 1603. In 1867, the last Tokugawa shogun announced the return of governing authority to the emperor here. The castle connects the beginning and end of that political era.
