Zen gardens and a brick aqueduct.
Explore the spacious precincts, then choose the paid Sanmon gate, Hojo garden or subtemples. The aqueduct area and paid temple interiors have different admission arrangements.
The story behind this place
Emperor Kameyama’s former palace became a Zen Buddhist temple in 1291. Centuries later, a brick aqueduct carrying water from Lake Biwa crossed the grounds. That contrast explains the unusual meeting of sacred architecture and modern engineering you see here.
