Palace grounds within a spacious garden.
Distinguish the palace visitor circuit from the surrounding Kyoto Gyoen park. Palace entry follows its own opening calendar and security arrangements.
The story behind this place
This was the imperial family’s residence until the move to Tokyo in 1869. Kyoto had served as Japan’s imperial capital for more than a thousand years, although the palace changed location and was rebuilt over time. The grounds preserve the setting of court life.
