A shrine of learning and plum blossoms.
Visit the shrine precincts; seasonal plum and maple gardens have their own tickets and opening dates. Monthly market days are much busier.
The story behind this place
The shrine honours Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth-century scholar, poet and statesman later worshipped as Tenjin, a deity of learning. Students visit to pray for academic success. Its plum blossoms also recall the special affection for plum trees associated with him.
