The story behind this place
Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, a 14th-century shogun or military ruler, developed this estate as his retirement retreat. It became a Buddhist temple after his death. The famous Golden Pavilion reflects the wealth and artistic ambitions of the powerful court and warrior elite.
