Sacred sand cones and a northern shrine.
Explore the shrine grounds, stream and sand cones beside the worship buildings. Special inner-sanctuary visits have a separate ticket and schedule. This is north of central Kyoto; allow time for the bus connection.
The story behind this place
Kamigamo and Shimogamo are Kyoto’s two Kamo shrines. Kami means upper and shimo means lower, reflecting their places along the river landscape. Kamigamo’s formal name, Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine, refers to the deity worshipped here; the familiar name helps visitors distinguish it from Shimogamo.
