Give the mountain a day of its own.
Enryakuji is in Shiga Prefecture and is grouped here as a Kyoto-area day trip. Focus on the Todo area; Saito and Yokawa need extra transfer time. Seasonal buses and cable maintenance affect access.
The story behind this place
The monk Saicho established a religious community on Mount Hiei in 788. It became the centre of Tendai Buddhism in Japan and an important place of study for later Buddhist leaders. The mountain setting was intended for disciplined religious practice away from ordinary city life.
