A grand courtyard and garden.
Combine the public shrine courtyard with an optional paid Shin-en garden visit. Events can affect access to the courtyard.
The story behind this place
Heian Shrine was built in 1895 to mark 1,100 years since Kyoto became the imperial capital. It honours Emperor Kanmu, who established that capital. Parts of the architecture recall the ancient palace, so this impressive shrine is younger than its appearance may suggest.
