Historic streets beside the modern city.
Explore permitted public streets and choose a café or meal. Obey private-lane restrictions; do not enter private property or pursue geiko and maiko for photographs.
The story behind this place
Gion developed beside the shrine now known as Yasaka Shrine. Its teahouse culture is associated with geiko and maiko: professional traditional performing artists and their apprentices. The neighbourhood is a living place of work and residence, not simply a historical stage set.
