Visit the temple precincts and selected halls in Nishinokyo. This is west of Nara Park and requires a separate rail or bus connection.
The story behind this place
Emperor Tenmu ordered a temple in 680 while praying for his consort’s recovery. She later became Empress Jito and continued the project. Originally founded elsewhere, Yakushiji moved to Nara with the new capital, linking its history with both healing and imperial life.
