Ancient wooden architecture in Ikaruga.
Allow a substantial visit to the temple precincts and museum areas. The station is not at the temple gate; include the return walk in a rail-only itinerary.
The story behind this place
Prince Shotoku, an early champion of Buddhism in Japan, is closely associated with Horyuji’s foundation in 607. The precinct contains some of the world’s oldest surviving wooden buildings. They offer a rare view of the architecture through which Buddhist culture took root in Japan.
