A forest temple with a delicate pagoda.
Allow time for the bus connection and stone steps within the temple. It is a remote visit with limited bus frequency; the upper sanctuary involves many more steps.
The story behind this place
Muroji is sometimes called Nyonin Koya, or “Koyasan for women.” It welcomed women during a period when they were excluded from Koyasan itself. The nickname recalls an important difference in access to sacred places, rather than a restriction that still applies today.
