A foothill town on the pilgrimage route.
Explore the small town and choose a heritage stop. This route uses rail from Koyasan; the long Choishi-michi mountain hiking route is a different full-day undertaking.
The story behind this place
Kudoyama means “nine-visit mountain.” Local tradition says the monk Kukai came down from Koyasan nine times a month to visit his mother at Jison-in, when women were excluded from the mountain. The name remembers a family bond within the area’s religious history.
