A sacred mountain town.
Choose a compact temple-town visit around Kongobuji and Danjo Garan. Okunoin needs additional bus and walking time; do not attempt every major site before a Kudoyama stop.
The story behind this place
Kukai, a Buddhist monk also known as Kobo Daishi, established this mountain centre in the ninth century after studying in China. Koyasan became a centre of Shingon Buddhism. Its temples and cemetery belong to an enduring religious community, rather than a single historic monument.
