Ohatsu Tenjin (Tsuyunoten Shrine).
Pair a respectful shrine visit with the surrounding restaurant lanes. Check current access before relying on a late visit; religious areas and nearby businesses have separate hours.
The story behind this place
The shrine’s popular name recalls Ohatsu, a heroine of playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s 1703 puppet drama, The Love Suicides at Sonezaki. The story was based on a tragic local event involving two lovers. Their memory gave the shrine an enduring connection with love.
