Follow the Pacific Ocean beneath the surface.
Kaiyukan is an indoor aquarium in Tempozan Harbor Village, on the Osakako side of Osaka Bay. Follow a route through habitats around the Pacific, from forest and coastal environments to the large Pacific Ocean tank with whale sharks. The same central tank can be viewed from different levels, so take time to notice how the view changes as you descend. Penguins and other marine-life exhibits add variety to the visit; displays and animals may change. Allow roughly 2–3 hours for the aquarium, with extra time for ticket queues, meals or the waterfront. The nearby Tempozan Ferris Wheel and Santa Maria sightseeing boat are separate paid attractions. Universal City and USJ are across the water, rather than within the same walkable neighbourhood.
The story behind this place
Kaiyukan opened in July 1990. Its exhibition concept connects the Pacific’s volcanic Ring of Fire with a Ring of Life: the habitats and creatures around that ocean. The route makes this idea tangible by moving between coastal environments and different depths of the central tank, rather than presenting every animal as an isolated display.
