Check your phone before paying
Confirm eSIM support for your exact model and country version, and that the phone is carrier-unlocked. Check the plan’s activation policy before installing: installation and the start of validity are not always the same.
Choose your Japan eSIM data package
Compare total-data and daily-data options for the same trip length. Check current pricing, hotspot support, speed limits and support language.
Japan eSIM — total or daily data
One Japan data-only product with total-data and daily-data packages. Choose duration and allowance together. Unlimited options also have a daily high-speed limit; read the selected package rules.
The direct links remain available if the product card does not load.
Sakura Mobile — NTT docomo data
An alternative using the NTT docomo network, with the setup QR code delivered by email. Compare the selected GB allowance and validity. After the purchased high-speed allowance, speeds may be reduced to 200 kbps; do not assume the headline means unlimited high-speed data.
The direct links remain available if the product card does not load.
Trip.com Japan eSIM — 24-hour billing
A Trip.com alternative offering daily or total-data packages for 1–30 days, advertised with 24-hour billing. Compare the same duration and GB allowance with the other options. Confirm the selected network, activation time, reduced-speed rules and tethering before paying.
Check total GB versus a daily allowance, reduced speeds after the high-speed limit, hotspot/tethering, top-ups, coverage and refund terms. “Unlimited” and “5G” alone do not explain the service. Data-only plans may not include a Japanese number, voice calls or SMS.
Before departure → on arrival
Save setup instructions and support contacts while connected to Wi-Fi. After arrival, follow your provider’s data-line and roaming settings. Keep your home line’s roaming charges in mind. Try loading a map before leaving the airport.
If eSIM is not right for you
Physical SIM / pocket Wi-Fi
A physical SIM needs a suitable unlocked SIM slot. Pocket Wi-Fi can serve a group, but you need to stay near the device, charge it and follow pickup/return rules. Check the airport’s current counters and opening hours.
Check whether your home carrier already includes Japan, how much high-speed data is available, and the charges for calls and SMS. Another SIM is not always necessary.
